ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING:
Throughout the school, we have an agreed marking and assessment policy which provides continuity and consistency for the pupils. The pupils are actively enclouraged to mark and assess their own and their peers' learning and suggest possible targets for further improvement, enabling them to take ownership of their own development. At Key Stage 1, the children are gradually introduced to homework which supports the acquisition of basic literacy and numeracy skills. In Reception, pupils read/share books at home which fosters a love of reading as well as practising reading skills and acquiring a wider vocabulary. They may also have a sound book that enables them to practise their phonics. In Years 1 and 2, there is a choice of activities to do that are based around the learning journey. Children can decide on an activity to do and the format they will do it in. See creative learning under the Gallery. There will also be a piece of maths and literacy to do that may or may not link to the learning journey, as well as spellings.
In Key Stage 2, the homework is extended as the pupils reach the top of the school, preparing them for the independent study skills they will require for Secondary school. They are still expected to read regularly to their parents, learn spellings, tables and produce an extended research task on a chosen theme. Some teachers invite parents in to look at this work at the end of term. Each teacher should let parents know when homework is expected to be handed in. The Headteacher is very happy to give support to children who are finding homework difficult and will work with them during the day to ensure they have the help they need.
Activemark is an accreditation scheme for the primary sector that recognises and rewards a school for its commitment to promoting the benefits of physical activity and offering good physical activity provision.The programme provides schools with a thorough auditing and development tool to help raise the standard of physical activity provision. St Mary's achieved Activemark in 2008.
RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL:
We are a Rights Respecting School. The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. A rights-respecting school not only teaches about children’s rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers / adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils. Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. St Mary's has achieved the bronze award and is well on its way to achieving the silver standard.
Artsmark is a national award that accredits quality arts education in England. It is Arts Council England’s flagship programme to audit, celebrate and develop high quality arts education in schools, further education colleges, and youth justice settings. It is developed innership with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department of Education and OfSTED. St Mary's has achieved the Artsmark silver award.
Healthy Schools enables and supports schools to plan and implement health and well-being improvements for their children and young people
A healthy school promotes physical and emotional health by providing accessible and relevant information and equips pupils and staff with the understanding, skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health. Pupils flourish in a positive environment and are given a voice to influence whole-school decisions. A healthy school understands the importance of investing in health to help pupils do their best, raise levels of achievement, improve standards and develop policies and practices to promote health. St Mary's has been a healthy school for many years and is working towards re-accreditation in the coming academic year.
